Twisted Puff Pastry Cinnamon Buns

After spending lake days enjoying a slow return to fall, I’m more inspired than ever to bake another batch of these buttery, melt-in-your-mouth cinnamon bun pastries. There is simply nothing more comforting to wake up to than a warm stack of puff pastry cinnamon buns. Especially, on brisk mornings that call for a belly-filling treat that toasts you up.

These little buns are very easy to make, and even easier to make disappear. My favorite Sunday morning magic trick!

To keep mornings simple, these scrumptious, soft buns only need 5 ingredients and 10 minutes to come together. Simply roll out your pastry, spread with a cinnamon-butter mixture, and a quick fold-slice-spiral action, and you’re halfway there. Pop the buns in the oven for 20 minutes, and brew up your coffee while your home fills with the most cozy aroma!

Let’s get into the quick and easy steps to make your own morning magic.

Ready to bake your own Twisted Puff Pastry Cinnamon Buns?

• Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.

• On a lightly floured surface, roll out two sheets puff pastry into two smooth rectangles (about 12″ x 8″ each).

• In a medium mixing bowl, beat butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar and cinnamon with an electric mixer until well blended. Spoon mixture between the two sheets of puff pastry and spread evenly to edges.

• Fold puff pastry sheets in half. Slice lengthwise into strips. You should get 5-7 strips per sheet. Twist each strip and roll up from the bottom into a small spiral bun. Place on prepared baking sheet, Repeat with remaining strips.

• Whisk together egg and water in a small bowl. Brush twisted buns with egg wash. Sprinkle with coarse sugar (optional).

• Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, until golden brown and puffed. Transfer buns to a rack to cool. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Honestly, these cinnamon-spiced, sweet and delicious buns vanish from the baking tray so quickly. There is something about snatching them hot out of the oven that makes them even more scrumptious. We love unwinding the buttery layers and enjoying every morsel with our morning coffee. These also make a cozy treat for after dinner.

I’m always looking for ways to jazz up the traditional cinnamon roll. In this recipe, I’ve found wonderful inspiration from In The Midnight Kitchen. In this post, Zorah has an easy-to-follow tutorial for how to shape the buns into spiral perfection. But, hey, if they go a little wonky . . . they are still incredibly decadent and mouthwatering.
